Choosing the Right Counselor
Selecting a
counselor who is a good match is important because the quality of the
relationship is crucial to the success of the work. Here are other
guidelines to consider:
-
The
counselor should be willing to answer questions about their training and
experience with regard to your particular concern or problem
-
It's
natural to feel anxious when meeting your counselor even when it's via
webcam. But, he/she should be able to put you at ease and make your
feel comfortable
-
Look
for a counselor who is willing to listen carefully and in a nonjudgmental
way. Pick someone who wants to explore issues rather than one who
offers a quick solution
-
More
often than not, you will know after the first couple of session whether a
particular counselor is right for you. Don't be afraid to tell your
counselor that you don't think this will work for you. A
professional counselor will understand and be willing to refer you to
someone in your area
-
Remember, there is no "world's greatest counselor," but some truly are
better than others. Counselors are human and have their own individual
personalities. Trust your instincts about finding the right one for
you or your family
